A Guelph couple faces a number of property and drug charges following their arrests Wednesday, report Guelph police.

Wednesday afternoon police were conducting surveillance when they observed a man enter a business on Stone Road West carrying a backpack which appeared to be empty. The man was seen selecting a number of items inside the business before exiting carrying the same backpack, which now appeared much fuller.

The male got into a waiting vehicle, which was stopped by police a short distance away. A man and woman were arrested, and during a search of the vehicle officers recovered stolen property. Also located were fentanyl and hydromorphone and items consistent with trafficking, including digital scales with suspected drug residue and several cellphones.

A 37-year-old Guelph man and 39-year-old Guelph woman face several charges including possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking, theft under $5,000, possessing stolen property under $5,000 and breaching court orders. They were both held for bail hearings Thursday.
