Guelph police are warning residents after two people had their debit cards stolen by males in what is believed to be a fake taxi.

Police report that around 7:30 Saturday night, a Fergus male was leaving a business on Woodlawn Road West when he was approached by a male asking for assistance. The male said he was attempting to take a taxi but only had cash and the driver was demanding to be paid with a card.

The victim agreed to pay for the $7 ride with his debit card and in return was given $10 cash. When the victim attempted to use his debit card an hour later he learned his card had been stolen and he had been given back a different card. He checked his bank account and discovered more than $950 in fraudulent transactions.

Approximately 11:15 p.m. a female called police to report a similar experience with the two males. The female quickly realized she had been handed the wrong card and cancelled hers before the suspects were able to use it.

The supposed customer was described as a white male, six feet and wearing a blue jacket with a fur hood in the first incident and a hoodie in the second. The driver was described as a possibly Indian male in his 50s. They were in a white or silver Toyota Camry with a taxi sign on the roof but no other markings.
