On March 19, 2019, the Guelph Police Service Drug Enforcement Unit executed three Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrants in the City of Guelph. These search warrants resulted in the largest fentanyl seizure in the history of the Guelph Police Service as approximately 266 grams of blue and purple fentanyl, with a street value of approximately $80,000, were seized. Two males and a female were arrested and charged with numerous drug, weapon, and property offences.

In May 2019, the Guelph Police Service received the results of the Health Canada analysis of the seized fentanyl and learned that approximately 260 grams out of the 266 grams of fentanyl seized tested as carfentanil. Carfentanil is an analogue of fentanyl that is approximately 100 times more potent.
