A Guelph manufacturing company and one of its supervisors have been fined after a worker was injured on the job.

Alcot Plastics on Malcolm Road has been ordered to pay $65,000, while the supervisor landed a $3,000 fine following a guilty plea in a Guelph court.

According to a release from the province, the incident happened Mar. 17, 2022, when a worker tried clearing a jam on a production line making pool noodles.

Noodles “frequently became jammed” in the cutter machine at the end of the line, and needed to be removed.

It added the procedure to remove the jams usually involved the supervisor, but a different worker went in between the cutter machine and a previous machine to lift a hinged cover over the cutter.

“The cutter was equipped with a device intended to stop the machine if the cover was lifted. However, it was not operational,” the release said.

“After lifting the cover, the worker reached into the still energized and running cutter machine and was injured.”

An additional 25 per cent victim fine surcharge must also be paid.
