Guelph man charged after victim stabbed during home invasion

On Sept. 19, 2020 at 9:10 p.m., [it is alleged that] an adult male kicked in the rear door of a residence located near the intersection of Waterloo Avenue and Edinburgh Road South in the City of Guelph. The male located an adult male resident in his bedroom, pointed a large knife at him and began grabbing items.

The resident attempted to escape out the window at which point he was struck with the knife in the left upper corner of his back causing a laceration approximately 8 inches in length and 3 inches in depth. The resident was ultimately successful in escaping and proceeded to a neighbour’s residence, who phoned the Guelph Police Service for assistance. The responsible male fled the area.

The male resident was transported to Guelph General Hospital by Guelph Wellington Paramedic Services for treatment. He was later released from hospital.

During the break-in, the rear door and two bedroom doors sustained damage.

At 11:09 p.m., police located the [alleged] responsible male and he was subsequently arrested.

A search incident to arrest revealed 0.6 grams of fentanyl.

A 34-year-old Guelph male has been charged with:
    •    Break, enter and commit mischief with aggravating circumstances - home invasion
    •    Robbery - theft
    •    Assault with a weapon
    •    Carry concealed weapon
    •    Weapons dangerous
    •    Possession of a controlled substance (fentanyl)
    •    Breach probation x2

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing on Sept. 22.

Please note that investigation has revealed that this was a targeted incident and there is no concern for public safety.
