On Sept. 18, 2020, through social posts, tips from the public and various other sources, the Guelph Police Service became aware of a large car meet gathering planned for Sept. 19 from 6-10 p.m. in a commercial parking lot located near the intersection of Woodlawn Road West and Imperial Road North in the City of Guelph.

Several hundred people had indicated on social media that they would be attending. A gathering this size would be a clear violation of the restrictions placed on organized public events and social gatherings by the Ontario government. As well, further investigation revealed that permission to hold the meet on private property had not been sought by the organizers of the meet. Therefore, the Guelph Police Service formulated a plan to mitigate the risk to the public.

The exits and entrances to the commercial parking lot were restricted and members of the public wishing to enter onto the property had to do so via the main entrance. Members of the public wishing to engage in lawful business at the various commercial establishments were permitted entry onto the property.

Several modified motor vehicles did attend the area, but very few entered onto the property. The few drivers that did enter the property did not pose a threat to public safety.

During the operation, police issued four Provincial Offences Notices to members of the public for:
    •    Speeding
    •    Improper muffler
    •    Drive no licence
    •    Drive motor vehicle, no currently valid permit

Please note that the vehicle operated by the male who was not licensed was towed as a result.

The Guelph Police Service would like to thank Guelph Public Works, Guelph Fire Department, Guelph Wellington Paramedic Services and Bob’s Towing for their participation in this operation that was ultimately very successful in keeping the public safe.
