Over 60 per cent of the Guelph Police Service were paid over $100,000 last year.

According to a report heading to the Guelph Police Services Board meeting Thursday, 211 members were paid six figures in 2023, the largest number of members reaching the threshold in at least the last 10 years.

Last year, 188 members were paid over $100,000, marking a 12.2 per cent increase year-over-year.

It comes ahead of the annual Sunshine List, expected to be released by the province by the end of the month.

“The $100,000 figure means salary before taxes and does not include taxable benefits,” the report states. “However, for those who are paid $100,000 or more, the total value of these taxable benefits must also be disclosed.”

The figure also includes per diems and/or retainers paid out.

The report goes on to add the $100,000 threshold has been the same since 1996, and if adjusted for inflation, the “real benchmark salary” would be about $174,886 in 2023.

The report says 11 members earned more than that last year.

Police attribute the rise in members paid six figures include overtime, collective agreements including provisions like payouts for sick leave upon termination or promotion, being able to request an overtime bank payout and special duties needing to be performed.

As well, police say the negotiated rate of pay for first class constables is over $100,000.
