A Guelph man was arrested Friday morning and charged with breaking into a home while the owner and her children were asleep.
Just after 6 a.m. Guelph police said they were called to a residence on Speedvale Avenue East near Metcalfe Street. The owner was awakened by the sound of a window being broken and an exterior door being removed.
Police arrived a short time later and found the man in the basement. The owner recognized him as someone who had earlier viewed a basement apartment as a potential renter. Damage was estimated at $400.
A 58-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter and breaching probation.
