Kyle Gemin is led into Guelph Superior Court by officers for the first day of his second-degree murder trial.

Kyle Gemin will spend at least the next dozen years behind bars after he was convicted or killing his grandfather over three years ago.

The Belwood man was handed an automatic life sentence with no possibility of parole for 15 years, in a decision rendered in Guelph Superior Court Friday.

Gemin, who killed his 74-year-old grandfather George Gemin in the trailer they shared at Maple Leaf Acres trailer park in June 2020, was found guilty of second-degree murder by a 12-person jury in October.

Being found guilty of second-degree murder comes with an automatic life sentence.

Friday's decision was all about parole eligibility, which is between 10 and 25 years for such a charge.

The Crown asked it to be set at 17 years, while the Defence wanted it at the minimum of 10 years. But Judge Gordon Lemon set it at 15 years.

Kyle was arrested July 1, 2020, and has been in custody ever since.

He is eligible for parole on July, 1 2035.

Kyle was also given a lifetime weapons ban, and has to submit a DNA sample.
