A Guelph man faces a number of charges after two women were followed by a stranger downtown Wednesday evening.

Guelph police say that approximately 6 p.m. a woman was walking on Macdonell Street when a man unknown to her grabbed her forearm and repeatedly said, “I’m touching you.” The victim broke free and continued walking, but a short time later felt a tugging on her backpack and looked to see the same man behind her.

She was able to break free again and walked to the police station to report the interaction. The man continued to the area in front of city hall, where he approached a woman sitting on a chair and stood over her, making it unable for her to get up. The victim climbed over the arm of the chair to get away from the man, who began following her until she too walked to the police station.

Several bystanders had contacted police to report the man's erratic behaviour. He was located on Macdonell Street and arrested.

A 38-year-old is charged with assault, two counts of criminal harassment and breaching an undertaking. He was held for a bail hearing.
