Guelph police say a Barrie-area man who tried to avoid a RIDE check Sunday morning has been charged with impaired driving.
Approximately 2:15 a.m. officers were checking vehicles on Wellington Street West at McCrae Boulevard when they saw a vehicle stop in a live lane and then abruptly turn into a parking lot.
An officer stopped the vehicle and spoke to the driver, noting an odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath. He failed a roadside breath test and was transported to the police station, where testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.
A 21-year-old male from the Barrie area is charged with impaired driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.
