A Guelph male already banned from driving faces new criminal impaired driving charges after being stopped on the weekend.

About 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Guelph police stopped a motor vehicle for driving without headlights in the area of Waterloo Avenue and Silvercreek Parkway South. The driver was showing signs of impairment and had a strong odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath, police say. Officers discovered several empty beer cans inside the vehicle.

The male was arrested and taken to the police station, where breath tests revealed he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system. Officers also discovered the male’s licence is suspended due to a previous impaired driving charge.

A 43-year-old Guelph male is charged with Impaired driving, impaired driving – blood alcohol concentration and driving while suspended.

His driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. He will appear in a Guelph court May 14, 2021.
