Within hours of meeting for the first time, a south end resident was allegedly attacked by his new roommate.

A 59-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault and assault by choking.

Police were called to the home at about 4 a.m. on Thursday. A man reported arrived home from work at about 10:30 p.m. to find a new roommate had moved in earlier in the day; it was the first time they’d met.

The victim had a bottle of alcohol, which a police news release says the new roommate demanded the two start drinking. After a few hours, the accused twice punched the victim twice in the abdomen, then grabbed him by the throat.

The victim managed to break free and retreat to his room to call police.

Officers arrived soon thereafter and arrested the new roommate.

He was released from custody with a condition he not return to the residence he had moved into just hours earlier.
