*************************
On Thursday Oct. 10, 2019 at approximately 10:06 p.m., the Guelph Fire Department responded to a reported alarm activation at 1291 Gordon Street. Firefighters arrived on scene to find reports of fire on the fifth floor in room 512.

When firefighters arrived on the fifth floor, they entered room 512 and found smoke and fire coming from a bedroom. The fire was quickly brought under control and subsequently extinguished. The entire fifth floor was ventilated as there was lingering smoke. The sprinkler system to the building was shut off after the fire was extinguished. A substantial amount of water migrated to other units on the same floor and numerous floors below. A number of tenants were displaced as a result of the water damage to their respective units. Victim Services arrived on scene to assist those who were in need.

There were no injuries as all tenants had evacuated prior to our arrival.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an overheated 3-D computer. An estimate of the damage as a result of this incident is unknown at the time of this media release.

The Guelph Fire Department would like to thank Alectra Utilities, Victim Services and Guelph-Wellington Paramedic Services for their assistance.
