Police and bylaw laid 46 charges at parties last Saturday

The Guelph Police Service and City of Guelph Bylaw Enforcement officers laid 46 charges during unsanctioned gatherings last Saturday; most of them under the Liquor Licence Act (LLA).

A breakdown of charges is as follows:

  • 35 charges under the LLA for open alcohol in public
  • 2 charges under the LLA for person under 19 consume alcohol
  • 1 charge under the LLA for public intoxication
  • 3 charges under a City of Guelph bylaw for hosting a nuisance party
  • 1 charge under a city bylaw for public urination
  • 3 charges under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) for passenger fail to wear seatbelt
  • 2 charges under the HTA for disobeying a stop sign

Of note, 14 of the charges for open alcohol, one of the charges related to persons under 19 consuming alcohol and all three charges under the Nuisance Parties Bylaw were laid on Chancellor's Way, where as many as 1,200 young adults attended an unsanctioned gathering which required significant response from police, bylaw and other first responders.
