Two Toronto-area men have been arrested in Guelph for allegedly stealing gift cards and replacing them with cards which had their data altered.
Approximately 4 p.m. last Thursday, officers were called to a business on Woodlawn Road West. Staff had observed two men concealing Apple gift cards in their pockets and replacing them with cards found to have been tampered with. The cards are believed to have been compromised in such a way that once activated the funds would be loaded onto a predetermined account, leaving the purchaser with worthless cards.
Officers arrived a few minutes later and located the men still inside the store. Both were arrested and a search revealed numerous Apple gift cards in their pockets. The men’s vehicle was seized for further investigation after officers looked inside and saw a bag which appeared to be full of Apple gift cards.
An investigation is also ongoing after a second Guelph business reported two suspects matching their description engaged in similar activity earlier Thursday.
Two Toronto men, aged 27 and 24, are charged with fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000 and possessing stolen property over $5,000.
