A Guelph man faces charges of impaired driving and assaulting police following an incident Monday evening.

Approximately 6:40 p.m., police were dispatched to a report of a vehicle in a ditch in the area of Imperial Road North and Woodlawn Road West. Officers spoke to the driver, who had exited the vehicle and was found to be showing signs of impairment.

The man was placed under arrest but became argumentative, striking an officer above the eye as he resisted being handcuffed. While being transported to the police station, the man challenged officers to fight and threatened to kill the officers and their families.

At the police station the man spit at officers and refused several demands to provide a breath sample.

A 42-year-old is charged with impaired driving, failing to provide a breath sample, two counts of assaulting police and uttering threats. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He was held for a bail hearing Tuesday.
