A Guelph man faces drug and weapons charges following a shoplifting incident last Friday.

Approximately 8 p.m. a man was inside a business on Elmira Road South when he was observed concealing various items. As he left the business without paying for the items he was approached by staff and took off on foot. An employee began chasing the man and updated police on his location until officers arrived moments later and arrested the male.

During a search incident to arrest police recovered stolen property as well as a spring-assisted knife and approximately $5,600 worth of suspected fentanyl.

A 38-year-old is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, carrying a concealed weapon, unauthorized possession of a weapon, theft under $5,000, possessing stolen property under $5,000 and breaching probation. He was held for a bail hearing Monday.
