Three impaired charges on the weekend

In one of the incidents, police say a driver almost drove into a parked police cruiser

Guelph police charged three people with impaired driving on the weekend.

On Saturday, approximately 5:15 a.m., a Guelph Police Service officer was diverting traffic on Edinburgh Road South at Water Street due to a watermain break. The officer observed a car speeding toward the marked cruiser, which had its emergency lights activated, before slamming on the brakes and coming to rest two feet from the cruiser’s bumper, report police.

The officer approached the car and made eye contact with the driver, who quickly drove away and turned onto a nearby dead end street. A traffic stop was initiated and the driver showing obvious signs of impairment. He was transported to the police station, where further testing revealed he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

A 23-year-old Cambridge male is charged with impaired operation and dangerous operation. His driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days.

Approximately 12 hours later, just after 5 p.m. Saturday, a witness called police after observing a driver knock down a stop sign at Gordon Street and Valley Road. Police attended and located a male sitting ina parked vehicle with significant front-end damage. The male was showing signs of impairment and had a strong odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath. Testing at the police station confirmed he had more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

A 37-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired operation and impaired operation – blood alcohol. His driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days.

Approximately 3:40 a.m. Sunday, police were called about a vehicle driving on a flat tire after hitting a curb on Rickson Avenue. Officers located the vehicle and spoke to the female driver, who said she was driving to a friend’s house to look for her lost driver’s licence. The female had a strong odour of an alcoholic beverage on her breath and admitted she had been drinking. Testing at the police station confirmed she had nearly three times the legal limit of alcohol in her system.

A 21-year-old Niagara Region female is charged with impaired operation and impaired operation – blood alcohol. Her driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days.
