A Guelph man learned the hard way that if something seems too good to be true, it likely is, say police.

The man called police Wednesday to report he overpaid for electronic equipment he bought from two men in a parking lot, a news release explains.

As he was leaving a Stone Road West business, the man said he was approached by individuals who claimed they worked for a technology company and had received extra stock, which they were selling at a discount.

The man reportedly viewed a surround-sound system, projector and screen. He agreed to pay $2,600 and withdrew the cash from a nearby bank.

“He later determined the equipment was not nearly the quality he believed it was,” police say.

The incident remains under investigation.

One of the suspected sellers is described as white, 30 to 40 years old, about six feet tall, with dark hair and a thin build. The second is described as white, in his late 20s, with a thin build and a thin beard.

At the time, both were wearing grey polo shirts with the name of an audio company on the front. They were driving a white Jeep Cherokee.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Const. Keith Kolodziejczak at 519-824-1212 ext. 7452 or email [email protected]. Anonymous details can also be left through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.csgw.tips.
