DRAYTON – Mapleton council has postponed on choosing a design for the new water tank in Drayton due to the expensive pricing of the proposed designs.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Coun. Paul Douglas moved a motion to postpone on choosing a design and to direct staff to discuss different options with the designer to make the designs more cost-effective.

“Council wanted to be more fiscally responsible as the designs were too expensive, so they directed staff to gather more information on the options council gave during the meeting and new pricing,” explained township CAO Manny Baron on the phone.

The township awarded the construction of the water tower to Landmark Structures in June 2021 and construction commenced in September 2021. Initially, council decided to paint the cone orange to match the township logo, however, staff expressed that the colour will rust over time.

As such, staff recommended that council choose a different colour and design for the new water tank and must do so before the end of March in time for Landmark Structures’ schedule. They intend to coat the tank on Apr. 25.

Township staff met up with two graphic design companies, HUB Creative and Wilkins Signs, to discuss the project and develop design options, which council discussed at Tuesday’s meeting.

HUB Creative’s designs were more expensive than Wilkins’, with a range of $65,622 to $73,340. Meanwhile, Wilkins’ prices ranged from $43,835 to $47,230.

Council directed staff to ask the designer for the pricing of the following changes to the landmark option A design:

  • For the tank section, council wants the words "Mapleton" and "Drayton" placed one above the other, positioned at front and rear of tank, which will be two sets in total. Also, they want to place the leaf emblem between the words. As for the cone section, they want to use HUB Creative's “B” design option;
  • As for the tank section, "Mapleton" and "Drayton" should be placed one above the other, positioned at front of tank, which will be one set in total; place the leaf emblem on either side of word, which will be two sets in total. The cone section will have HUB's “B” design.
  • Same as the first option, except for the cone section, use HUB's “D” design.
  • Same as the second option, except for the cone sectio, use HUB's “D” design.
