MAPLETON – As the township continues to develop a management plan for all of its municipal assets, costly upgrades have been identified for two public facilities in Mapleton.

In a new report on exemplifying levels of service and demand drivers for Mapleton's existing assets, the Drayton Fire Hall and public washrooms at the Moorefield Ball Park have been identified as two public assets that will require costly renewal needs totalling over $1,000,000 within the next 10 years.

"Infrastructure assets exist primarily to support the delivery of service. Developing, monitoring and reporting the levels of service is crucial for asset-owning organizations to achieve their objectives," said staff in the report. "Understanding demand drivers enables the organization to understand the demand for their services and plan the best way to meet the changing customer demand over time."

According to the report, 90 per cent of the building that houses Moorefield Ball Park's public washroom is in poor condition and might become unfit for use if recommended renewals are not undertaken.

With replacement valued at $300,000, staff are recommending the township explore the feasibility of two portable washrooms at the location instead of investing in the building's renewal.

The township currently invests in two portable washrooms during the summer at the park in addition to the existing facilities.

The Drayton Fire Hall is also facing upcoming renewal needs after the fire hall was almost submerged during a flood in 2017.

With renewals estimated at $900,000, staff are recommending council consider a "more strategic approach" to meet the hall's renewal needs due to its location in a floodplain.

Both issues will be discussed at next Tuesday's council meeting.
