GuelphToday received the following Letter to the Editor from reader Kim Rogerson, in regards to the recent decision to overturn Roe V. Wade in the States:

Dear Editor,

I was glad to see the peaceful crowd of over 100 people outside city hall, speaking up for the continuation of reproductive rights in our country. There has been much said to the south of us about what this will mean for the future in terms of the reproductive health of Americans as they move forward.

In the last century, thousands of people in Canada fought tooth and nail for the right to cast election votes and for the right to even be called "persons under the law." Fast forward to 1973 and the USA Roe vs Wade landmark decision that protected a person's right to abortion. Fast forward again to 2022 and here they are next door once again controlling reproductive rights.

I work in the field of anti-violence here, but if I worked in the US, I would feel so worried for victims of sexual assault resulting in unwanted pregnancy. When I look at what is happening to our neighbours in the south, I have to wonder if people's right to vasectomy and other forms of birth control will soon be overturned as well. If so, I have a button for that: " 'I love it when the state controls my reproductive organs' said no person ever!"

I am now, more than ever, so thankful to live in a country where reproductive rights are human rights.

Kim L Rogerson,
Guelph
