LETTER: Turn former drill hall building into temporary shelter

'Here is an empty building which the city owns, right downtown'

The drill hall sits on the northeast corner of Wyndam and Farquhar streets on the outskirts of Downtown.Richard Vivian/GuelphToday

GuelphToday received the following Letter to the Editor from Sue Woodward, who expresses concerns with homelessness in the community:

I was moved by Liz Hales's letter today: yet another plea for immediate action on the problem of homelessness in our city. I was one of the people misled by the Community Cold Weather Response into thinking that there were sufficient shelter beds, especially in extreme cold weather.

I refer to this article below about the former drill hall building. Here is an empty building which the city owns, right downtown. Has no-one thought of making it into a temporary shelter? It has been pointed out that other cities have come up with creative solutions: why not Guelph?

Sincerely,
Sue Woodward
