Since January this year, the city of Guelph has charged 31 individuals and four businesses for breaking COVID-19 protocols.

Stacey Hare, communications officer at the city said businesses have been charged $750 each for allowing a large number of people indoors, staff not wearing masks, and failure to ask customers to wear masks.

She said the city does not identify the businesses.

Eleven individuals have also been charged in relation to social gatherings. Two of those gatherings took place in the second week of March and were of $750 each. Four individuals were also charged $1,000 for obstructing justice when issued a ticket.

All charges are provincial fall under the Reopening Ontario Act.

Guelph Police and bylaw officers also issued two $750 fines during the second week or March in response to one large gathering.

Currently, as per Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health safety protocols, the City of Guelph allows up to 10 people to gather indoors and up to 50 people gather outdoors given that there is at least two metres distance between people who don’t live together.

Residents are able to report large gatherings or businesses failing to comply with COVID protocol on the city website.

The city also updates a summary of COVID-19 complaints and charges under the Reopening Ontario Act here every Tuesday.
