Nearly $4 million in capital funding will fund a previously-announced expansion to a Guelph emergency shelter.

The money, $3,941,000, will be used to add a third storey to the existing Stepping Stone location at 23 Gordon St.

The project will help create 24 new emergency shelter beds and 12 transitional housing units, is slated to be complete in February 2025.

This is in addition to the existing emergency shelter services.

According to a press release, the sources of the funding cannot be published at this time due to “communication embargos.”

“This critical project would not be possible without the generous funding the county has received,” said Warden Andy Lennox. “We look forward to publicly recognizing our funding partners at the appropriate time.”

As many as 75 beds could be available with the new space, though it's expected 63 beds will be the standard.

Around 27 beds are being provided on the ground floor already, while another 24 beds will be created on the second floor, which is being used as office space at the moment.

The yet-to-be-built third floor will, once complete, provide the 12 housing units. Those units could be converted to 24 shelter beds if more space is needed.
