A little cardboard, duct tape and lots of fun (13 photos)

Senior elementary students learn workplace skills in building and racing a boat made from cardboard and duct tape

Skills Ontario brought the annual cardboard boat races to Guelph's Centennial Pool on Friday.

The event is held in 250 schools in 14 cities across the province, involving 1,500 students. It gives students the opportunity to learn skills in design, construction, planning, teamwork and workplace safety.

Senior elementary students spend the morning designing and building their cardboard boats out of two 4-foot-by-8-foot pieces of corrugated cardboard and some duct tape.

They are judged on construction, speed, weight and team spirit.

Winners are eligible to take part in the provincial championships in Waterloo.
