All about the roundabout

Motorists should exercise caution on Highway 7 between Guelph and Rockwood

Steady progress is being made on what will be the first roundabout in the immediate vicinity of Guelph.

The traffic calming/safety measure is being constructed 2.2 kilometres east of Guelph on Highway 7. New lanes are now going in at the site.

Motorists should exercise extra care as they travel on the highway between Guelph and Rockwood.

The approach to the intersection of Highway 7 and Jones Baseline is situated on a sharp curve in the road.

The construction is causing traffic delays and long lines of vehicles at times. Speed limits are reduced and well marked through the zone.

The groundwork for the project began earlier in the summer, and the roundabout is expected to be completed by late spring of next year. The site is busy with many crew members, trucks and earth-moving equipment.

In its existing configuration, the intersection is noted for being a treacherous one and has been the scene of numerous collisions over the years.

News of the roundabout was first announced by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation back in the spring. It involves a total teardown and rebuild of the intersection, with culvert replacement, new storm sewers, and lighting.

The ministry champions roundabouts as a way to reduce collisions, keep traffic moving, and reduce noise.
