Fergus Scottish Festival offers everything from sheep shearing to heavy events

The annual Fergus Scottish Festival takes place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The popular annual event, which started in 1946, actually gets its official kick off Thursday with the pipes, plaids and pageantry parade in downtown Fergus beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday events start at 8:30 a.m. at Centre Wellington Sportplex with various Scottish heavy events competitions, including a heavy events schools competition Friday, the professional big boys on Saturday and women and men on Sunday morning.

Noted historical romance author Diana Gabaldon will once again be appearing at the festival, with two readings and autograph sessions both Saturday and Sunday.

The Highland Games 10k and 5k runs are scheduled for Sunday at 9 a.m. starting at Victoria Park.

Archery and sheep shearing demonstrations, pipe and drum competitions, Scottish dancing and tug of war competitions take place throughout the weekend.

Saturday night will feature live music in the Highland Pub tent featuring Canadian Celtic rockers The Mahones.
