In the exhibition Alien, local artist Kate Wilhelm presents a show of small photographs of the artist’s suburban neighbourhood here in Guelph. All of the photos where taken during solo walks in the evenings.

Exhibit Title: Alien
Artist: Kate Wilhelm
Gallery: Capacity 3 Gallery
Dates: May 2 - June 10, 2017

Wilhelm is not trying to spy on her neighbours, but is rather looking through the maze of similar architecture for signs of human life through the objects found - such as seasonal decorations of a snowman or halloween ghosts hanging from a tree.

Wilhelm explains… “I lived in this neighbourhood when I was in university. I remember walking home from the bars along the silent streets with not a single light on in the houses. I felt sorry for the sleeping inhabitants, those boring, pathetic people in their boring, ugly bungalows.

And now here I am. For nearly nine years now, I’ve lived in this neighbourhood, one of those boring folks with a full-on boring life. And every time I walk around it, I strain to see signs of human life.”

Kate Wilhelm holds a B.A. from the University of Guelph. Her first solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Guelph ran from January to April 2015. She was named a 2011 Flash Forward Emerging Photographer by the Magenta Foundation and her work was included in The M Word: Real Mothers in Contemporary Art (Demeter Press, 2011).

The Capacity 3 Gallery presents the work of emerging, mid-career and established artists, showcasing both regional and national work. This event is free and open to the public Tuesday-Friday 12 - 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

The Capacity 3 Gallery is located on the first floor of the Boarding House Arts Building, 6 Dublin Street S., Guelph.

The exhibition will run from May 2 to June 10, 2017 with a reception on Saturday, May 13 from 1-3 p.m.
