NEWS RELEASE

GUELPH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

On Wednesday, February 24, the Guelph Chamber of Commerce will host Lawrence Schembri, a Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada, for a constructive discussion with members of Guelph’s business community at the Guelph Economic Leadership Forum.

The Forum, hosted in partnership with RBC, will provide the avenue to discuss risks to financial stability and how the private sector and individuals could be impacted.

“We are pleased to have Lawrence Schembri engage with the community to discuss the Bank’s role in assessing important economic issues such as household debt,” says Kithio Mwanzia, President & CEO of the Guelph Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Schembri is one of two deputy governors responsible for overseeing the Bank's analysis and activities in promoting a stable and efficient financial system.

As a member of the Bank's Governing Council, he shares responsibility for decisions with respect to monetary policy and financial system stability, and for setting the strategic direction of the bank.

His published research has focused on exchange rate and monetary theory and policy in open economies, the international monetary system and financial stability.

“This is particularly exciting as this is the first time that our community is hosting a member of the Governing Council of the Bank of Canada.  It is especially timely now since Guelph has been named a jobs powerhouse” says Mwanzia. “The Guelph Chamber is committed to upholding that title and this is an opportunity to educate local business.”

The growth of the city will continue to create a need to better the economic and financial well-being of Guelph.

By the business community engaging in a candid exchange of ideas with the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada, there is the opportunity to provide greater direction for the future of the local economy.
