Body recovered from Belwood Lake (update)

The following is a news release from the Ontario Provincial Police:

TOWNSHIP OF CENTRE WELLINGTON - On July 29, 2018 at approximately 4 p.m. Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a water rescue on Lake Belwood.

Four men had stopped their boat in about 6 Meters (20 feet) of water to swim. While swimming, one of the men was overtaken by water. Despite efforts to safe him he failed to resurface. OPP, Centre Wellington Fire & Rescue and Guelph-Wellington Paramedics Service attended and searched for the missing man until dusk.

On July 30, 2018, the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (U.S.R.U.) searched the area and located the body in the vicinity where he was last observed.

He was identified by family at the scene as 31-year-old Sathees Gnanenthiran of Mississauga. The Office of the Chief Coroner is investigating the cause of the death. The deceased was not wearing a life jacket.

OPP are thanking the public for their assistance in keeping clear of recovery efforts.

OPP in Wellington County say their dive team has found a body in Belwood Lake, believed to be that of a 31-year-old Brampton man who disappeared in the water.

Police say late Sunday afternoon, two men became distressed while swimming in the lake.

A boater who spotted the commotion was able to rescue the second man. Police say the first man went under and never resurfaced.

Rescuers canvassed the water until dusk, and returned with sonar equipment Monday morning to scan the lake.

A body was pulled to shore just after noon on Monday.

No names or other details have been released.
