At a policy and corporate services meeting on June 19, trustees approved the Wellington Catholic District School Board 2023-2024 operating budget of $119.5 million and capital budget of $5.4 million.

The board is presenting a planned deficit of $292,595 for the 2023-24 school year.

The planned deficit represents less than 1 per cent of the board’s operating revenue and the board will utilize the available accumulated surplus to address the budget shortfall. This year’s budget was challenging as the board adjusted to the first year of the elimination of the COVID recovery funding.

“We have worked diligently in this budget process to mitigate the deficit. Our priority each and every year is to support our students and staff in providing exceptional environments to learn and work. This is reflected in the upcoming budget which has a focus on staff support and opportunities for students to thrive in the classroom,” shared Tracy McLennan, associate director.

“We are proud of the efforts of our staff to serve our students in innovative, inclusive educational environments enriched by faith. Our budget prioritizes and aligns with foundational learning for future student success, an emphasis on student support and well-being, and unique programs and partnerships to promote experiential learning, including our Primary Years International Baccalaureate, outdoor learning, Specialist High Skills Major Programs in Secondary schools, and much more,” added Michael Glazier, Director of Education.

Enrolment is projected to increase from the current year. The continued growth of the Board is reflected in several capital projects planned for the 2023-2024 school year including a child care centre at St. Patrick School, Guelph and an 8-classroom addition at St. Joseph Catholic school, Fergus.
