Chalmers' 11th annual garage sale happens Saturday morning

Organization helps the city's poor disadvantaged

The donations started pouring into the Harcourt United Church early Friday morning, in support for the annual garage sale of Chalmers Community Services.

It was the second day of donations, and the auditorium space in the back of the church was starting to fill up. By about 10 a.m., a team of volunteers was having trouble finding room for all the household items, tools, art, books, and jewellery that was coming in.

Saturday’s sale starts at 9 a.m. and runs until noon, just three short hours to get in on the first large institutional garage sale of 2017.

Chalmers hopes to raise over $2,000 from the cash-only sale, money that will support the organization’s programs that serve the hungry in Guelph.

Steve Kilby is the garage sale coordinator. This is its 11th year, he said. Last year the event raised $3,000.

“Chalmers Community Services does terrific work helping the poor and disadvantaged,” he said. “The funds from the sale will go into general operations, mostly into food programs. We have two food pantries.”

Donations to the sale come in from all parts of the city, and from many who are not directly connected to the church or to Chalmers, Kilby said. The sale helps enhance the visibility of the organization, while adding to its coffers, he added.

Harcourt United is at 87 Dean Ave., east off of Edinburgh Road S.
