Guelph's Vic Treiguts is helping celebrate the life of his late sister Rita next week by hosting a stop on a fundraising walk that honours her and two other strong women.

The Long Walk Home For ALS and Cancer will make a stop in Guelph on May 2, visiting Treiguts' Guelph home at 25 Somerset Glen, where a fundraising celebration will take place in the condominium complex's clubhouse at 7 p.m..

Treiguts brother-in-law John Scarbrough and his two brothers Kevin and Tim are walking 459 kilometres from North York to Ann Arbor, Michigan. They get underway on April 29.

Treiguts is involved as part of the support crew.

Thus far the walk has raised about $11,000, Treiguts said.

The walk is in honour of three women, including Treiguts' sister Rita, who died of ALS on May 12, 2016.

She was the second wife of John Scarbrough, the main organizer of the walk who also lost his sister to cancer four days before Rita died and also lost his first wife Janette to cancer in 2010.

All three women were in their 50s.

"They're walking about 20 miles a day. It's going to be quite a workout," said Treiguts. "They're no spring chickens."

More information about the cause and the people involved can be found on the fundraising effort's Facebook page.
