The City and the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1189, representing about 200 of the City’s full- and part-time Guelph Transit employees, will head to the bargaining table this May.

Last night Council was clear in providing staff with direction and a mandate for the upcoming union negotiations with the ATU Local 1189.

“We hope to negotiate a fair, reasonable and affordable contract with our transit employees,” said Mayor Cam Guthrie. “We want this contract to recognize our belief that Guelph Transit employees should be compensated appropriately for the valued work they do, and also recognize the need for balance to ensure long term affordability for our citizens.”

The two bargaining teams will set negotiation dates to start in late May. The current contract agreement between the City and the ATU Local 1189 expires on Jun. 30, 2017.

The City routinely negotiates collective agreements with all its employee groups including the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1189, Canadian Union of Public Employees locals 241, 973 and 1946, Ontario Public Service Employee Union local 231 paramedics, Guelph Professional Firefighters Association, and the International Association of Theatre Stage Employees local 357.
