City chooses locations for new pedestrian crossovers

Meant for roads that could benefit from pedestrian crossing but that don't qualify for full crosswalks

The city has chosen the first five locations that will be getting new pedestrian crossovers next year that give pedestrians the right of way on roads not busy enough to warrant full crosswalks.

Called a Level 2 Pedestrian Crossover, they are intended for locations that could benefit from some form of pedestrian crossing tool.

They are also only in areas with four or less lanes and where the speed limit is 60 km/h or less.

The new crossovers involve signage, a marked crossover on the pavement and pedestrian-activated flashing amber lights. Cars and bicycles are required to stop when pedestrians wish to cross at them. They are not full crosswalks.

The first five locations are:

  • Grange Road at Kearney Street
  • Grange Road at Auden Road/Schroder Crescent
  • Waterloo Avenue between Woodycrest Drive and Beechwood Avenue
  • Woodlawn Road East at Atto Drive
  • Ironwood Road near Reid Court

The Ironwood Road crossover may be delayed as city staff has to do further review of the location due to the recent transit changes in the area.

Staff reviewed a total of 15 locations based on public requests for pedestrian crossings. The decisions on where to put them are based on volume of vehicles and volume/type of pedestrians.

Staff will review and update the need for crossovers on a regular basis.

The crossovers cost roughly $20,000 each to install.
