The City of Guelph is interested in showing Raptors playoff games in Market Square, but it needs partners to make it happen.

Several people had been wondering why Guelph wasn't interested in putting on a 'Jurassic Park'-type event in the city, where fans could gather in a public space and watch the NBA Finals on a big screen.

Mayor Cam Guthrie took to Twitter Friday to explain that the city is interested, but that there are financial and logistical obstacles that would require some businesses to step up to make it happen.

"The logistics for this for Guelph are complicated," Guthrie said, adding that unlike some municipalities, Guelph does not have the audio and video systems in place to show the games.

It would take considerable financial outlay to put the games on, he explained.

"However, the city is looking to see if there is any willingness on people or businesses in the community that would maybe like to partner with the city and maybe bring Games 4, 5 6 and 7 ... to Market Square."

Sponsorships and donations are being sought.

"We would love to talk to you because we are looking for someone to partner with to make it happen," the mayor said.

"We want to make it happen, we just want to be fiscally responsible at the same time."

The city has put on shows in Market Square in the past, but that took planning and renting of equipment and hiring people to pull off. Those events were budgeted for.

He asked that any business or individual willing to partner with the city should contact the mayor's office.
