Construction plans for the South End Community Centre continue to progress, with the city currently accepting bids to build the $80 million project.
Five companies were pre-qualified as bidders late last year, with final proposals being made now. The deadline for submissions is Feb. 17.
The pre-qualified companies are:
Aquicon Construction Co. Ltd. of Brampton
Ball Construction Ltd. of Kitchener
JR Certus Construction Co. Ltd. of Vaughan
EllisDon Corporation of Mississauga
Maple Reinders Constructors Ltd. of Mississauga.
Once the bidding period ends, the city has 90 days to select a successful candidate and sign the necessary contracts, Ian Scott, the city’s manager of facility design and construction, said in an email.
The 165,000-square-foot facility was approved by council in the fall of 2020.
It’s to be built off Clair Road beside Bishop Macdonell Catholic High School, just north of the Larry Pearson baseball complex. It is to include a 25-metre pool with eight lanes, two gyms, two ice pads, indoor walking track and five meeting rooms.
Construction is expected to begin this spring, with completion slated for 2025, though public opening is anticipated in late 2024.
