A long-standing footbridge over Norfolk Street will be removed later this month as part of the city of Guelph’s plan to build a new parkade on Wilson Street.

The city will close Norfolk Street to vehicular and pedestrian traffic between Waterloo/Wilson streets to Macdonell on April 19 and 20 to allow for the removal.

In addition, there will be no pedestrian or cyclist access to the ramp on the west side of the footbridge or to the sidewalk in that stretch of Norfolk Street during those days.

Access to downtown will be detoured through Wellington and Wyndham streets for those travelling from the south end to the downtown and Woolwich and Wyndham streets when coming from the north.

Trucks accessing downtown must use Macdonell Street due to height restrictions of the Wyndham Street rail bridge.

Downtown shops, restaurants and businesses will remain open through the removal process.

Some Guelph Transit routes will be affected by the footbridge removal, visit www.guelphtransit.ca for information.

The new $20-million Wilson Street Parkade will create almost 500 parking spots when it is completed in summer of 2019.

A new footbridge is planned to eventually be constructed in place of the existing one as part of the parkade project.
