City to host John Galt Day celebration

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the public is invited to take in live entertainment featuring Bex in Motion, a professional hula hooper and fire dancer, and Bella Magic, a Toronto-based illusionist and juggler.

Cleo the Clown and her Painting Pals, the Guelph Water Wagon, food trucks, and Jeff Mann of TREAD ON IT! T-shirt printing will also be onsite during the festivities. Attendees are invited to bring along an old T-shirt for re-purposing at the interactive printing booth.

Guelph Farmers’ Market vendors will be at the Gordon Street market location and on Wilson Street from 7 a.m.to 2 p.m.

“It’s great to have Guelph Farmers’ Market involved in the celebration again this year,” says Danna Evans, manager of Theatres and Civic Events for the City of Guelph. “The Market continues to be a community gathering place and a focal point of our downtown. Expanding the event space to include both Wilson and Carden streets allows for a wider variety of programming and connects two busy civic spaces.”

In addition to the family-friendly activities, the City’s 2016 Artist in Residence, Lisa Hirmer, is scheduled to launch her Weather Watcher project during the event.

Using the vehicle of everyday banal conversations about the weather, Hirmer aims to engage the public in gaining deeper insight into our understanding and beliefs about the impact that weather and its changing patterns have on the lives of those who live, work and play in our city.

About John Galt

John Galt was a prominent Scottish novelist who founded Guelph in 1827. As the superintendent of The Canada Company, a large land company in London, England, he conceived the idea of building a town to stimulate and direct the agricultural settlement of the area.

Galt planned the community with its distinctive radial design, quite different than the gridiron plan of most cities, making Guelph a unique and special place.
