After getting tired of the rallies and confrontations that took place in the last year, a community member in Guelph is holding a peace vigil downtown.
Along with other community members, retired University of Guelph professor David Josephy has organized the Guelph Silent Vigil for Peace which will take place in front of city hall from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday.
“We just figured there’s been enough confrontation, desperation and competing rallies and so on and we just want to say we’re standing for peace,” said Josephy.
“I just thought it’s not the Canadian way. That’s not what we need. We need to come together and not divide.”
Josephy said flags, signs, badges or literature are not welcome at the vigil because he doesn’t want it to turn into another rally.
“That’s exactly what we don’t want. We want solidarity. Not confrontation,” said Josephy.
“We don’t want any interpretation for this and we’re just standing for peace in our community in our world beyond.”
He said he would like as many people from diverse communities as possible to join the vigil.
Attendees will be expected to socially distance themselves and wear masks at the vigil.
