Conestoga College's Guelph campus is opting out of a Guelph Transit universal bus pass program.

Conestoga Students Incorporated (CSI) signed a one-year deal with the Guelph Transit last year to test out a universal bus pass where the price of a bus pass is included in student fees.

However, only 50 per cent of the students at Conestoga's Guelph campus picked up their bus pass and as a result, the CSI will not be going forward with the program, according to a city report.

The structure and pricing of the program were adopted from the existing one currently in place for the University of Guelph.

For the pilot program, 367 students of Conestoga’s Guelph campus participated in the fall of 2018 and were charged $134.90. For the winter semester of 2019, 347 took part.

The number of students participating in the summer is unknown but the students will be charged $136.90 for the semester.

“The one-year Universal Bus Pass pilot program resulted in $49,508 of revenue for the fall semester of 2018. The projected revenue for the winter semester of 2019 is $47,000 and $2,300 for the summer semester of 2019,” says to the city report.

The yearly contract ends in August 2019 and will not be renewed. However, the CSI is interested in discussing a potential semester pass, the report says.
