Council to decide fate of proposed student housing project

A 1,149-bedroom student residence is proposed for the corner of Stone Road and Gordon Street

Will a 1,149-bedroom student residence be built near the University of Guelph? That’s the question being put to council for a decision later this month.

City council is scheduled to weigh-in on the latest plan for 716 Gordon St. during its Oct. 17 planning meeting.

A numbered company behind the proposal wants to build a six to 11-storey building connected to a three or four-storey podium with a ground floor cafe on the southeast corner of the Stone Road/Gordon Street intersection.

If allowed to go ahead as-is, the project would have 532 residential units with 1,149 individual bedrooms collectively.

A range of official plan and zoning bylaw amendments would be needed in order for that to happen. They include increased density, reduced parking requirements, reduced setbacks and lessened common amenity space.

During a public meeting in July, several nearby residents raised concerns about the impacts of noise, parking, traffic, tree preservation and more.

The deadline to register as a delegate or make a written submission for the Oct. 17 council planning meeting is Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. To register, visit guelph.ca/delegation, call 519-837-5603 or email [email protected]. Unregistered delegates will also be given an opportunity to address council.

The meeting will be held inside council chambers at city hall and streamed live at guelph.ca/live.
