An 83-year-old Guelph man accused of killing his 84-year-old wife last November has been declared unfit to stand trial.

The ruling regarding Alistair Wood was made in the Ontario Court of Justice on Wednesday.

Reasoning for the decision could be considered evidence in the case and are covered under a publication ban.

Police were called to the couple's home in the Village By The Arboretum on Nov. 24 where the body of Kathleen Mary Wood was found and Alistair Wood was arrested without incident.

Wood's case has now been assigned to the Ontario Review Board. Their role is to evaluate and monitor individuals declared unfit to stand trial and decide if and/or when they are fit to stand trial. The review board will also decide if and where he should be hospitalized and any conditions that need to be imposed.

The review board is made up of health care professionals, lawyers and members of social service agencies.

A ruling of unfit to stand trial does not dismiss a criminal charge.

During his initial court appearance last November it took Wood several attempts to confirm biographical questions used to confirm his identity from the Justice of the Peace. It was also pointed out that Wood has difficulty hearing.

There is a publication ban on evidence regarding the case.

At the time of the arrest Guelph Police did not disclose the circumstances of how they were informed of the incident or any other details.
