Decision date set for proposed 10-storey student housing project

Staff recommendation regarding 785 Gordon St. next Friday

The fate of a proposed 10-storey student housing building on Gordon Street is set to be decided on Sept. 12.

That’s when city council is slated to decide on a series of requested zoning bylaw and official plan amendments that, if approved, would let the project move forward.

A numbered company which owns 785 Gordon St., which is currently home to the Days Inn, seeks to demolish the building in order to construct a 10-storey, 389-unit student residence with 520 individually leased bedrooms, with commercial space on the ground floor.

City staff is expected to release its recommendation – either urging council to approve or reject the plan – next Friday.

During a July public meeting, area residents raised a number of concerns, including traffic congestion, overflow parking, privacy of neighbours, amenity space and more, along with suggestions the student building would decrease surrounding property values.

City council is expected to make a decision on Sept. 12, during its planning meeting which begins at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be streamed live at guelph.ca/live and available for in-person participation inside council chambers at city hall.

The deadline to register as a delegate or make a written submission for the Sept. 12 council meeting is Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. To register, visit guelph.ca/delegation, call 519-837-5603 or email [email protected]
