ERIN – An opponent group to Erin’s upcoming wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is disappointed but not deterred by a minister’s ruling against a federal review of the plant.

Jonathan Wilkinson, federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, released a ruling on Wednesday declaring Erin’s WWTP does not warrant designation under the Impact Assessment Act.

The Coalition for the West Credit River, a collection of groups opposed to the plant, said in a statement it is not stopping their work to fight the plant.

The coalition has continued to stress the WWTP’s effluent discharge into the West Credit River will pose a threat to coldwater brook trout habitat through temperature change.

A press release from the coalition states the West Credit River has one of the few remaining self-sustaining native brook trout populations in southern Ontario.

“We will continue on with our work to protect this highly valued coldwater brook trout population in the West Credit River,” said coalition chair Judy Mabee in a press release.

“We are more than willing to work with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and other federal and provincial regulators, including the Town of Erin and its consultants, to continue to advocate for a wastewater plant that sets a new best in class industry standard for the protection of sensitive coldwater receiving streams.”
