Excavation work closes Baker and Wyndham parking lots

The Baker and Wyndham Street parking lots permanently closed Friday for the Baker District redevelopment project

The Baker Street and Wyndham Street parking lots officially closed on Friday to begin the Baker District redevelopment project.

Parts of the Baker Street lot were blocked off as bore drilling was underway. A small portion of the Wyndham Street parking lot was also blocked off.

The formerly public burying grounds will be mechanically dug up to clear the site of any archeological artifacts. The city’s goal is to transform the existing municipal parking lot and adjacent properties into a “compact district nestled in Guelph’s historic core that will create a renewed area of activity, commerce and civic space for the local community and city.”

The city already removed parking payment machines at the end of September and made parking free before the lots closed. Some cars are still parked in the Baker Street parking lot.
