FERGUS - After a two year deferral due to budgetary restraints, Centre Wellington Council finally awarded the reconstruction work of St. George Street East to Steed and Evans Limited for $1.64 million, which is $280,982 under budget.

The work which comprises the reconstruction of St. George Street East in Fergus from Herrick Street to Gartshore Street saw a total project cost of $2.1 million. It also includes the soil excavation, granular base, hot mix asphalt, storm sewer, watermain, sanitary sewer, concrete curb and gutter, and concrete sidewalk.

The township staff received responses from six different firms:

  • Steed and Evans Limited bid $1,644,617
  • J. Weber Contracting Limited bid $1,647,416.65
  • Network Sewer and Watermain Ltd. bid $1,765,965.70
  • E. & E. Seegmiller Limited bid $1,841,327
  • Wyndale Paving Co. Ltd. bid $2,135,063.25
  • Drexler Construction Limited was disqualified as they submitted an incomplete bid

Triton Engineering and township staff have recommended the tender be awarded to Steed and Evans Limited at a contract price of $1.64 million including contingency and excluding tax.

Steed and Evans Ltd. had the lowest bid. In total, the anticipated project costs are $280,982 under budget.

Coun. Bob Foster was happy that the project is moving forward as the reconstruction section is an older part of St. George Street East.

“This was developed in the ‘60s and formerly the sidewalk was terminated right at that corner, so I’m very happy to see this proceed and I think residents will be happy to see it proceed as well. It’s been a long time coming,” said Foster.
