Fire crews on scene of house fire on Guelph's east side (updated)

Call for 106 William St. came in just after noon

8:15 p.m. update:

GuelphToday has received the following release from Guelph Fire Department. 

Fire at 106 William St. Guelph:

On March 31, 2019 at 12:27 p.m., the Guelph Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at the above noted location. Units from station 2, 3, 4, 5, and 1 arrived at the scene and found a fire in the basement of the home.

Upon entry into the home firefighters found the fire burning in the basement ceiling with fire spread into a closet on the main level. The fire was quickly brought under control and subsequently extinguished.  

There were no injuries to the resident or firefighters, all personnel were evacuated before the arrival of the Guelph Fire Department.

The cause of the fire along with an estimate of damage is still under investigation. Guelph Fire investigators were contacted. The results of the investigation will be followed up at a later time.

Guelph Hydro attended the scene to shut down the power to the building. Guelph Police were also on scene to assist with traffic control. 

Original story, 1:45 p.m.:

Fire trucks from several halls responded to a house fire at 106 William St. Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters were seen entering and exiting the bungalow on Guelph's east side, between Casino Avenue and Meyer Drive, wearing breathing apparatus.

While the smell of smoke hung heavy in the air there were no visible signs of fire on the outside of the house.

The call for a residential fire came in just after noon.

There was no immediate word of any injuries, cause or damage amount.
